Ambassador Christian Academy Middle School students have had the wonderful opportunity of taking care of oysters that will help restore the Barnegat Bay habitats. Students were given a 2 hour course on clams, oysters and the Barnegat Bay watershed habitats. During the course, volunteers who run the ReClam the Bay came to teach and give hands on demonstrations for the students. ReClam the Bay is groups that partners with Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County, the Barnegat Bay Partnership and NJ Fish and Wildlife Aquatic Education foundation to educate students and residents about the plight of the Barnegat Bay and the creatures that live in it. Students feed the oysters, measure water temperatures, monitor salinity levels and measure the growth of the oysters once a month. Just before the end of the school year, students will take a field trip to one of the county’s Upweller sites to return the young oysters to a more natural habitat, with running bay water for the summer. Ambassador is one of 5 schools in Ocean County that is growing oysters for the Shellfish in the Classroom project, and the only private school in the program.

ACA’s Kindergarten through 8th grade students recognized a unique moment in history September 12th, as they a stood in front of a 9-11 memorial set up by the Anderson & Campbell funeral home across the street from ACA. As cars drove by and honked their affirmation of the gathering at the memorial, students led in a pledge to the American flag, and prayer for our country and for the families of those who were lost on that day ten years ago.

Older students learned about the tragedy in history class several days earlier. and the entire group was read the story The Little Chapel That Stood (read it at home online at http://www.abcurtiss.com/graphics/books2/l_chapel/little_chapel1.htm). It is a story about the centuries old St. Paul’s Chapel that once stood in the shadows of the World Trade Center towers. The picture book tells the story of that fateful day from the perspective of the church that remained unscathed in the devastation and served as a welcoming refuge to rescue workers and others who needed a place of comfort during a very difficult time.

Students filed quietly by the memorial and placed a red carnation, donated by the funeral home, at the base of the wall filled with the names of those whose lives were lost. It was a moving experience that hopefully none of our children will forget as most of them are too young to remember the first event. We are thankful for the freedom we experience in America and especially for the freedom we value at Ambassador that allows us to pray with our children when confronting events and memorials such as this one.
